NAIDOC Week is on across the country, and Greater Dandenong is marking it properly — this week's Big Story looks at "50 Years of Deadly" through the eyes of Bunurong Elder Uncle Mark Brown and Jillian West. Worth your time.
A tougher note: police are still searching for missing Dandenong woman Yun, also known as Michelle. Her disappearance remains out of character and unresolved — full details in Safety below. We're also following up on the fatal house fire in Springvale South, and there's a genuinely lovely thing happening this Saturday with the ASRC's Winter Food Drive.
This week's Suburb Spotlight lands on Dandenong North, and there's a ripper Only in Dandenong from a reader who's nailed exactly what makes this place smell the way it does.

NAIDOC Week is here, and Greater Dandenong is marking 50 years of "Deadly".
NAIDOC Week 2026 kicked off Sunday 5 July, and Greater Dandenong Council has marked it with a feature on the word "deadly" — Aboriginal English slang for excellent — and the 50 years since it entered wider Australian usage. The council's piece centres two voices: Bunurong Elder Uncle Mark Brown and Bunurong and Palawa woman Jillian West, both speaking to what the word, and the week, mean on Country.
Greater Dandenong sits on Bunurong land, and NAIDOC Week is a chance for the whole community — not just Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents — to recognise that history and the culture that continues alongside it. In a city where more than 150 languages are spoken and most residents were born overseas, it's easy for First Nations recognition to get lost in the noise. This week is a deliberate pause on that.
What this means for you: council-run NAIDOC Week events are on across libraries and community hubs this week — check greaterdandenong.vic.gov.au/events for what's on near you. It's also a good week to ask an Elder a question you've always wondered about. Most are happy to answer.

🔥 Also This Week — Springvale South
Coroner to prepare report after fatal house fire.
Victoria Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following a fatal house fire in Springvale South late on Friday 3 July. Fire Rescue Victoria crews removed an unconscious man in his 70s from the burning property; he later died. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

🥫 Also This Week — Choosing Compassion
The ASRC's third annual Winter Food Drive is on this Saturday.
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre is calling on the community to help restock its Dandenong Foodbank, which around 1,000 people seeking asylum rely on every month for essentials. Many are locked out of the right to work or study while their visa claims are processed.
Saturday 11 July, 10am–2pm at ASRC Dandenong, Oldham Lane. Drop off food and hygiene items, or step inside for a tour of the Foodbank. Full details here.

🔎 Suburb Spotlight
Dandenong North
Postcode 3175 · Approx. 27km SE of Melbourne CBD
Dandenong North doesn't get talked about the way the market precinct or Springvale does, but with around 22,550 residents, it's one of the bigger suburbs in the LGA — and one of the most quietly diverse. More than half of residents were born overseas, with strong Sri Lankan, Afghan, Vietnamese and Indian communities calling it home.
It's a working, family-oriented suburb built around a few solid anchors: Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre and Armada Town Centre for the weekly shop, and Lyndale Secondary College among the local schools. The M1 and EastLink both run close by, which makes driving in and out easy — though the train station sits down in the suburb's south, so residents further north are more bus-and-car than rail.
It's not flashy, and it doesn't try to be. Dandenong North is the kind of suburb that just gets on with things — parks, schools, shopping strips, and a genuinely multicultural community living alongside each other without much fuss made about it. That's a strength, not a gap in the story.

🛡 Safety Update
Search continues for missing Dandenong woman Yun (also known as Michelle)
Victoria Police are continuing their search for Yun, 39, a Dandenong accountant reported missing on 30 June. She was last seen on Wednesday 1 July walking towards the beach at a foreshore car park in Parkdale, where her vehicle was later found with her phone and keys inside. Police say her disappearance is out of character and are not treating it as suspicious. Anyone who sights Yun should call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Anyone with information should call Dandenong Police Station on (03) 9767 7444.
Man charged over fatal Dandenong South crash
A 21-year-old driver has been charged with culpable and dangerous driving causing death following a single-vehicle crash on the South Gippsland Highway on Friday 26 June, in which a 21-year-old passenger died at the scene. Motorised bikes on footpaths are illegal regardless of what they're carrying, and Victoria Police do act on reports — Highway Patrol officers have already picked up at least one heavily-illegal e-bike rider in Keysborough this year.
